Different stains react differently depending on fibre type, pH, age of the stain and any previous attempts to clean it. Some stains can be improved, while others may cause permanent colour loss. DIY products often set stains or damage fibres, so a proper assessment is needed before treatment.

How Stains Behave in Carpet Fibres

General Stain (Included During Carpet Cleaning)

Advanced Stains (Require Specialist Treatment)

Some stains need extra time, fibre testing, or DG chemistry. These are charged due to the complexity and cost of treatment:

  • Rust

  • Browning

  • Urine

  • Dye stains

  • Heavy food dyes

  • Old protein

  • Peroxide‑related stains

These stains are more difficult and may not fully remove depending on age, fibre type, and previous cleaning attempts.

Browning Disclaimer

Browning stains are assessed on arrival. Many browning stains are permanent — especially if they’ve been present for years or were caused by previous cleaning attempts. Browning treatment may lighten the area but full removal is not guaranteed.

Stain Colour Guide

Grey/Black Stains

Usually oil‑based. Often removable with standard stain treatment.

Brown Stains

Usually tannin (tea, coffee, plant matter). May lighten, but can be permanent depending on age.

Yellow Stains

Often urine or protein. Requires specialist treatment. Results vary depending on how long it’s been there.

Red/Pink Stains

Usually dye‑based (cordial, icy poles, cosmetics). Advanced stain category. May require multiple treatments.

Orange Stains

Often food dye or coloured drinks. Results vary depending on fibre type and age.

Grey Haze

Typically browning or wicking. Often permanent. May only lighten with treatment.
